Finding Balance: Navigating Work Life After a Cancer Diagnosis
The Challenge
Balancing a demanding career with personal well-being is a challenge many face, but it becomes even more complex after a life-altering event like a cancer diagnosis. As a stage 3 rectal cancer survivor and an independent consultant, I’ve experienced firsthand the difficulties of maintaining this balance. In this post, I want to share how I’ve navigated my work life post-diagnosis and offer insights on achieving a harmonious balance between professional responsibilities and personal health.
The Immediate Impact
From the moment I received the diagnosis, I had to prepare mentally for battle. My world was turned upside down, and suddenly, my career took a backseat to focus on treatment and recovery. The shift was not easy. I had to learn to prioritize my health above all else, which meant stepping away from my work, a core part of my identity. This period taught me valuable lessons about the importance of self-care and the need to redefine what success means.
Reimagining My Business
As I began to recover, it was clear that my business couldn’t just go back to the way it was. I had to reimagine what my consulting practice could look like given my new realities. Here are some strategies that helped me:
1. Setting Boundaries
One of the first steps was setting clear boundaries to protect my health. I became diligent about defining my work hours and ensuring I had time for rest and recuperation. This meant saying no to late-night emails and weekend meetings and yes to activities that rejuvenates me.
2. Prioritizing Wellness
Wellness became a non-negotiable part of my daily routine. I embraced regular exercise, mindfulness meditation, and a balanced diet. I do strength and conditioning exercise sessions 3 times a week. I’m more intentional about eating nutrient-dense meals because food is fuel. I’m more mindful of taking regular breaks from my desk to reset physically and mentally. These practices didn’t just help me physically; they improved my mental clarity and focus, making me more productive and present in my work.
3. Choosing the Right Clients
I’ve become much more intentional about how I spend my time and energy. I’m now clear about the type of clients I want to work with and the kinds of projects I want to contribute to. Every minute feels more precious, and I’m focused on using the remaining time I’ve been gifted to make a meaningful impact. I want to work with people and brands that improve our quality of life.
Wellness in the Workplace
As an independent consultant, I have the freedom to set my own schedule. However, I recognize that most people either work for or lead organizations. In organizations of any size, prioritizing employee well-being is crucial. Here are three initiatives you can implement to support employee well-being:
1. Health and Wellness Programs
Encourage physical and mental well-being by offering subsidized gym memberships, healthy meal vouchers and nutrition planning services. Implement mental health days, wellness workshops and regular health screenings to support a holistic approach to employee health.
2. Wellness Buddy System
Establish a wellness buddy system where coworkers pair up to support each other in achieving their wellness goals and maintaining healthy routines. This system can enhance accountability, foster teamwork and create a supportive community within the workplace.
3. Open Communication
Foster a culture of open communication where employees feel comfortable discussing their health needs without fear of stigma or discrimination. Regular check-ins, anonymous feedback channels, and supportive leadership can make a huge difference.
Balance is an Ongoing Journey
Balancing work and health is an ongoing journey, especially after a cancer diagnosis. But with clear boundaries, a focus on wellness and thoughtful choices about the work we do, we can create a life where thriving is the norm. Let’s redefine success together, making room for joy, health and a little bit of magic along the way.
